Reduction of the piston of the first cylinder in the provision of the top dead point (TDP)

The Top Dead Point (TDP) is called the highest point of a piston stroke in the cylinder. Strictly speaking, in 4-stroke engines in the course of rotation of a bent shaft this situation is reached by each of pistons twice: once at the end of a step of compression and the second – at the end of a release step. At performing procedures of control and adjustment of the engine position of the piston of the first cylinder in VMT of the end of a step of compression is in most cases used.

Need for reduction of the piston in the provision of VMT arises when holding many procedures, in particular such as service of the valvate mechanism, removal and installation of the camshaft, GRM drive components, etc.

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Make sure that transmission is transferred to neutral situation, then cock the parking brake, or prop up back wheels of the car antiretractable boots. Separate sockets of an electrical wiring of coils of ignition and turn out spark plugs (see the Section Check and replacement of spark plugs).
  2. Reduction of any of pistons in the provision of VMT is made by a provorachivaniye of a bent shaft of the engine in the normal direction of rotation by means of a face key with the ratchet drive (clockwise) for the bolt screwed in an end face of a forward pin of a bent shaft. In the presence of the assistant, the preliminary provorachivaniye of the engine can be carried out by a starter (short breakthroughs) from the driver's place under the leadership of the operator.
  3. If the head of cylinders is not uncovered, turn out spark plugs and establish компрессометр in a candle opening of the first cylinder (see the Section of the Door).

Kompressometr has to be completed with a carving nozzle with a connecting hose not less than 15 cm long.


  1. Turn a bent shaft so that the notch on its pulleys coincided with the mark "0" in a GRM drive belt cover. At the same time the piston of the first cylinder will be given in VMT.
  1. It is possible to make sure that VMT of the end of a step of compression is reached, watching indications of a kompressometr – at approach to VMT of the end of a step of compression pressure will begin to grow in the cylinder considerably. If the head of cylinders is uncovered, it is possible to make sure of achievement of VMT of the end of a step of compression, watching pushers of all valves of the first cylinder – they have to be free, i.e. working ledges of the corresponding cams of camshafts have to be turned up.
  2. If VMT of the end of a step of release is reached, then for reduction of the piston in VMT of the end of a step of compression turn a bent shaft in the normal direction on a whole revolution.
